ABOUT

Helen Cawthorne enjoys an interesting and varied UK-based career as a pianist, accompanist, chamber musician and coach. A snapshot of recent work includes a recital of contemporary works and new commissions at London’s Purcell Room; examining tours in Europe and East Asia for the ABRSM; performances of Schubert and Wolf Lieder, of English Song and of Beethoven chamber music at venues in London, the South of England and the Midlands; teaching piano students and coaching chamber music at the Junior Academy of the RAM; preparing piano students for undergraduate and postgraduate performance exams at the University of Southampton.

IN BRIEF

Following prizes and awards at the RAM for both solo playing and accompaniment, Helen Cawthorne first appeared at London’s Purcell Room while still a student, and her Wigmore Hall début came just two years later.  In the same year she performed in the Westmorland Concert Series at the Purcell Room and over the course of her career she has returned to the Southbank Centre many times as a song recital accompanist and chamber musician, most recently with the contemporary piano group Piano40 for their tenth appearance at the venue.

Helen has played at leading concert halls, at music clubs and at festivals around the country. A long-standing working partnership with her husband, baritone John Barker, has included BBC broadcasts and recordings on the Sain and Regent Records labels. Her most recent work has also included collaborations with Bayreuth-based soprano Catriona Gallo and piano trios with violinist Hilaryjane Parker and cellist Alexandra Mackenzie.
